STRATEGY FOR AIPMT/ NEET 2012

The article for all the students who have taken a year drop to try their luck once more to get selected in medical entrance examinations or those who are depressed and disheartened on not being able to pursue their dream of becoming a doctor this time and confused whether to risk a year for fulfilling their dream or to join a regular degree programme .

Tips and Suggestions

1.Identify your mistakes which you committed last year..What was the reason behind you being not selected in the exam. Whether you did not study or you did not study from the point of view of a competitive exam or you did not know what to study or you did not solve the previous years papers.

2. Learn from your mistakes. Making mistakes is not a major issue but repeating them will always prevent you from success. This rule applies everywhere in life.So rectify them and don’t repeat this time.

3. Don’t lose hope..have faith in your self and prepare yourself for one year of hardwork and 100% devotion.

4. If you really want to be a doctor, develop qualities that are the trademark of a doctor- hard work, determination, consistency and patience. There is no alternative to hard work, not even smart study as the latter too requires a lot of hard work.

5. Smart study – It is very important to note that you are not doing a PhD but are preparing for the medical entrances examination. You just have to study what ever is asked in the examination after all whatever you will be studying has no use in the profession you are opting for. It is a habit prevalent among many students to study from a high level book and flaunting the same in front of their friends and teachers to gain popularity in the class. First, it is of no use and second, it leads to wastage of time and may also hamper your success in the exam.

To make you understand this fact, I am citing a n e.g. before you. I have included the same in my book Biology @ Your fingertips

Q. It would be my third attempt for pre-medical tests. I have been preparing for medical entrances since I was in class 11th. I have even studied H.C. Verma, Resnik-Halliday  for physics, Neil Campbell for Biology and Deb Mukherjee for chemistry, but still I am unable to get through medical entrances. What more do I need to study?

Ans.  First, you need to bust this myth that the syllabus of PMTs demands solving  questions from very high-level books that are mostly read by the engineering aspirants. The level of questions in physics and chemistry is very low as compared to those asked in IIT-JEE. In PMTs, questions are simple and formula based but time is less and also the cut-off goes very high. So the examination paper demands you to be thorough with your concepts and the formulae should be on your finger tips. Solving from ultra-advanced and high level books is sheer wastage of time.

However , some questions from physics and chemistry which have earlier been asked in IIT JEE are repeated in PMTs especially BHU (Pre and Mains) and such questions can be found in any standard Physics objective book.

Also it is usually seen that some students are not able to clear the exam even after taking many attempts and studying rigorously while some crack PMT in their first attempt and that too without much effort.

The reason is very clear. While the former lack guidance and by hit and trial method , they study from whichever book they come to know of, the latter restrict themselves to few but authentic books and with proper guidance and smart & selective study, they come out with flying colours without unnecessary effort.

6. Is it necessary to join a coaching institute for preparation?

It depends upon your way of studying and whether your basic concepts are clear or not . If your concepts are clear and you are smart enough to understand by reading from books directly, then go ahead, study by yourself. After all coaching teachers are no wizards. They cannot wave a moron into a genius! They are only there to teach you, to help clear your concepts; if you can grasp the topic yourself then its sufficient.

However if you are one of those who cannot grasp the concept by directly reading from the book, and are dependent upon teachers, then you can join any coaching institute and attend the classes regularly. Don’t hesitate to ask questions and clear your doubts with the teachers. But please never blindly follow what all they say, the teachers (mostly; however exceptions are there) can teach you but they cannot guide you on how to excel in exam.

But still, I would suggest that it is better to join some local coaching to help you clear your doubts and provide you with basic concepts of the subjects. A little guidance is very essential to prevent you from unnecessarily wasting time reading unimportant facts.

7. Evaluate yourself regularly by taking mock test papers ( with strict examination like conditions)

Is there any need to join any test- series program for this purpose?

If you have enrolled for a classroom contact program, then you should regularly take the topic- wise tests conducted by the institute. But if you have not joined any institute but are preparing by yourself then it would be better if you buy a set of previous year’s question papers of exams than joining any of the costly test series. As it is, these test – series include unnecessary questions in the tests with the sole purpose of attracting more and more students.

Take previous years’ questions and solve a particular paper whose cut-off you know. Keep seated for the entire time limit and simulate the entire environment of the examination hall.  (for time management skills, refer to my post Strategy for MP PMT 2011)

After completing, match your answers and calculate your total percentage. Match it with the cut-off. No test series can give you a better assessment of your ability. Also, while you are analyzing, mention the mistakes and silly errors that you have made in each subject. Solve a paper at least every 2-3 months during your preparation period. Make a note book so that you can have a look at your own analysis. It would save thousands of money spent on futile test series, and I assure you that you would definitely benefit from this.

7. Solve more and more Previous Years papers – You can solve the previous years papers in a way as I have discussed before . Alternatively, to be quick, you can just solve a question and confirm your answer by looking at the answers. If your answer is wrong, go to the solution and look where you went wrong. Don,t forget to mark that question for future reference. While solving biology paper , learn correct answer, mark it and also  jot down few extra points, mnemonics, other related facts/terms that come to your mind at that time after reading that question so that the next time you come across that same question, you can also glance across the other points you noted down yourself. This ensures easy and fast revision and the probability of missing out on topics while revising is also greatly reduced.  In this way, you can use your previous solved paper book for revision just before exam. I had too followed the same approach.

8. Which Books to refer?

There are many books available in the market but none of them tell you exactly what to study and what to not.  None of them tells you which topic is important but in my both books handbook of biology and biology @ your fingertips, I have included only the relevant and important and frequently asked points with an assurance of over 80 – 90% questions in biology from the same book.

Prescribed textbook combination

Biology – any textbook ( Trueman) /notes of your coaching institute + NCERT + both of my books (Handbook and Biology @ your fingertips) + Dinesh objective
Till now I have written just two books and I am also working on the text book and an objective book for biology. But this would take time. So, you should buy above books. I also referred to the same books.

Note : this is the ideal combination, which I have prescribed, so if at any stage you are running out of time, you can only rely on my books along with NCERT
Physics – comprehensive / teacher’s notes + A.K Aggarwal objective book or any other book which your teacher has specified.
Chemistry – Pradeep textbook and P.Bahadur for objective + NCERT

P.S. – If you have studied any other book instead of what I have mentioned then go ahead with it, no need to waste time studying from a new book.

9. Develop a feeling of healthy competition with your friends. Don’t be jealous of them if    they know more or don’t become complacent if they don’t fare well. Remember, you are not just competing against them but lakhs of other students. Instead of wasting time in gossip, discuss mnemonics, important facts, numericals with friends; it will make memorizing easier and you will also come to learn a lot more new things from them.

10. Fore more tips and suggestions, keep visiting the site. The site is still under construction and still there are many more things to be added.

11. Start studying again. Your target should be to complete the entire syllabus by December and start revising in January or alternatively, you should also revise the syllabus side by side in case you have joined a coaching institute as they usually finish the syllabus by February.

12. Also, keep checking your progress monthly by solving mock test papers as I have mentioned before.

These are a few points which you need to remember before starting preparation for AIPMT and other medical entrance examinations which you are going to appear in next year. If you have any query, feel free to ask. Wishing all the PMT aspirants all the best!

Refer to my book handbook of biology .It helps you in last minute revision and contains all the important and frequently asked points with 100% strike rate in any medical entrance exam. the book is available in the market. It also contains last minute revision strategy, suggestions and tips for time management in exam.. The book has 126 pages and its MR prize is Rs.100 . .you can buy the book and also tell your frns about it..in case it is not available in your city, ask the book seller to order it from Galgotia Publications and their phn no. is 0120-4235977 , 09718732278 , 0120-4204800

    Hello! 🙂
As of now I’m in class 12th and I really want to get in KMC….I am fairly good in biology but not so much in class 11th physics and chemistry as my teachers failed to provide me with basic concepts of 11th….I recently joined a coaching class and hope to do better in 12th…Is it possible for me to crack any medical entrance exam based on class12th knowledge only?

    • Deepak Dwivedi says:

No, you should equally have good knowledge about 11th too. Only biology wont help you, try improving yourself in physics and chem too.

My botany goes very weak.. My problem is nt regarding buks bt regarding my mind wch cnt grasp so much of cramming nd itz so hard that evn if i gve more dan a hour to it thn itz lke striking my head on wall.. Is d problem regarding me or evry1 faces d same? I wud greatful if u gve me sm tips
    thankyou!

    • Deepak Dwivedi says:

Unlike Zoology, Botany is more memory based esp topics like Plant Kingdom coz there is nothing conceptual or anything to understand in it, you literally have to cram it.
trust me its the same case with most of the people.
The only way to overcome this is regular revision, and solve maximum MCQ’s…
Because many a times in various exams questions are repeated even without changing the options.
And you’ll have to stop considering it as a hectic, instead try out various techniques of studying, increase your memory power by daily revision.
      Best of Luck 🙂

  10. SUHARA says:

I have attempted aipmt two times and neet ug one time. is there any chance for attending aipmt once again. waiting for your valuable reply.

    • shushant shandilya says:

see if you are improving then drop again, and if your study is showing demotion then stop doing so. it would be useless.

      • vishnu sharma says:

sir , for cmc and wardha entrance, should i pay more focus to physics and chemistry or biology??

      • shushant shandilya says:

sir, what is the difference between your book and mtg’s biology today??plz reply .which should i use for preparing for wardha??

      • vishnu sharma says:

sir ,i’m a dropper in aakash. here they teach a lot lot lot of outside NCERT in biology .do i need to learn all these or not??is it going to help me crack wardha or jipmer?? will then my physics and chemistry problem solving skill go down due to too much focus on BIOLOGY LIKE THIS in aakash??I DON’T WANT TO BE A DROPPER NEXT YEAR ALSO.WHAT SHOULD I DO??LEARN ALL THAT VAST INFO FROM AAKASH??SIR PLZ PLZ PLZ HELP ME…

Dont pay attention to them. Though some ques will come from aakash package yet do physics and chem first

      • vishnu sharma says:

sir, then for cmc biology only ncert will be enough????

      • shushant shandilya says:

        No. Read biology at fingertips

    • vishnu sharma says:

sir , can u explain what u mean by doing hardwork ?? i’m not joking sir.does it mean sitting till late night and studying///??PLZ REPLY

      • shushant shandilya says:

Hardwork depends on student itself, depends on how much passionate you are, depends on how much determined you are. Hardwork simply means if you get a topic at once then keep studying next topics. And if you didnt get it at once then keep trying again and again.

  11. Ashish sharma says:

Sir for biology prepration ncert enough
becoz suprem court has baned neet exam.

  15. Purva Natoo says:

Sir, I am in 11th now.I want to get admission in AFMC.I haven’t joined any couching classes and wish to do everything by self study. So how should I should I prepare???Plz reply soon

    • As of now, admission to AFMC is based upon neet scores. So, you need to get your basics right.
for physics, take a book like pradeep or dinesh. keep on solving the objective questions because it is the only way to qualify neet.
for chemistry, ncert seems to be sufficient at times, but books like pradeep become necessary. practice as many questions as you can.
for biology, you need to study ncert very carefully(especially the current editions!). also.i’d recommend rahul sir’s biology @ your fingertips.
It isn’t necessary to join an institute to crack neet, but practice is! make sure you tackle a lot of objective questions daily, because only knowledge cannot help you crack entrance exams.
p.s. do make a proper time table for different subjects!
      all the best!

    • ashima, physics tests in aakash at times are very difficult(especially aiats!). you do not need to worry about your low ranks at times in aakash.
all you need to do is keep up your efforts and solve as many questions as possible. i’d suggest you to complete your neet package and practice previous year questions from books like arihant.no need to worry!

    Hi Rahul Sir,
I was asking weather Biology books by GRB publications (Zoology by RK Pilai and Botany By Kumar-Mallik )Sufficient for cracking the biology part in PMTs?
Also I follow Comprehensive Physics and MTG Objective Physics for my physics preparation and OP Tandon for chemistry (Physical , Inorganic, Organic)? are these books ok to follow ? Also, I was asking what are the important organic conversions do I have to learn ? and what books should I refer for Assertion and Reason and GK for AIIMS exam as I have not enrolled in any coaching institute ?

    • krsourabh says:

books of physics nd chemistry are good.grb books for bio r good bt ncert is the best.for assertion reason read theory part of ncert well.solve previous year questions.for gk refer sheet of allen.

Thats very well evident from the way you write, ure Confused . Start practicing meditation, read books that calm you.

Dont Go in for a PHD on entrances,Stick to the BASICS. Be thorough with your NCERT,Past papers and Notes. Dont read up multiple books during the last few days(that’ll just intensify your confusions) Read NCERT and Your notes. And Dont be nervous or hyper, that just elevates your chances of marking negatives.

Its already time that you start revising 11th,finish it by Mid jan. 12th isnt as vast,So you’ll be able to cope up.

Hey Sir, currently now i am in class 12 and i wasted my whole 11 wondering here and there. Now i have realized my mistake and want to work harder to get rank under 500 in aipmt. What should i do this whole year as i need to do 11 class 80% physics and chemistry but biology part is 80% prepared… and boards also.. Is it possible at this stage to score above 95% in board and selection in aipmt under 500 rank… Please tell which book should i refer for Physics, Chemsitry and Biology. How much efforts i need to put for this ?

    • Rahul Chawla says:

      3. For chemistry, read NCERT plus Pradeep…now here you will have to be selective.read only the important things.
      4. For Physics just read Comprehensive..don’t go in details..read only the basics…cram all the formulas and see and in fact learn all the solved examples. I mean memorize and understand how to attempt a question of a particular type. learning formulas are very important.
      5. Solve all BHU, AIPMT, AIIMS and your state pmt past papers. while solving, you will come to know which kind of questions are asked, how to approach the question and what are the important topics. read the solutions given at the back.also simultaneously learn the answrs in case of biology.
      5. Get my book Biology@ Your fingertips..you will not need to study anything else except the NCERTs..even all the important points of the NCERT are covered in my book plus a lot of mnemonics and flowcharts. You can even leave solved papers if you don’t have time because I have covered most of the questions ever asked in the text form.
      6. Start with class 11th syllabus and finish it in 2 months. from June start studying 12th. It would automatically prepare yourself for the entrances. after the exams, start revising what all you have read.
      please read my article

      7. keep following the website and also read the doubts of other students as well.

Right now no need of objective book coz there is no time left.
for bio, do NCERTs plus both my books. Handbook is available at flipkart.com and biology @ your fingertips would be available in Jan. biology @ your fingertips would be an ultimate book for biology and I assure nothing would be asked in any exam beyond that book and the book would have just around 500 pages. Also solve AIPMT , BHU and UPCPMT past papers.
for physics and chem, just do pradeep or any reference book..read theory, understand concepts, learn formulas and see all the solved questions and solve a few of them..no need to go for unsolved questions at this stage. So, no need to waste more time..do read my article http://pmtgurumantra.wordpress.com/2011/07/18/aipmt2012strategy/ and buy my book.
also tell all ur frns about my book.

    Hi Sir,
I’m Deepak from Bangalore and even i have many doubts regarding this NEET..! Though NEET will be conducted in the upcoming year, many state have opposed and appealed in the Supreme court so as to conduct their state entrance’s. I guess even Karnataka will Not be conducting CET ,if NEET is held, which i dont want it to happen. State entrance is a bit easier than the National level Entrances..! Though i’m not much tensed about this issue, i want to know few tips to crack the NEET. I’ve purchased ur book and i’ll be getting it shortly! What are the Do’s & Dont’s for me at the moment..? I want to crack the entrance, no matter if its NEET or cet, at any cost..!
Please do reply with your valuable feedback………….

    • Rahul Chawla says:

There is a lot of confusuion regarding NEET… PLEASE DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME THINKING ABOUT IT….It would ruin your studies..whatever MCI will do, leave it to them, you stick to your studies. There are minute changes which are significant only for those who has read everything and for those who have not completed their syllabus, they must not waste any time more thinking about the issue. Just study and there won’t be drastic changes or there might be no changes at all or even if they plan to change the syllabus and the pattern of exam then you are not alone, every one wil suffer.ok, and it is nothing like time nahi hoga baad mein, if you waste today’s time in thinking about the syllabus, percentile or no negative marking… checking out on internet every single day about the NEET exam, you won’t be able to concentrate on your studies. So, it is a request to everyone ,please don’t waste this time..don’t wait for the syllabus or exam pattern to be disclosed.Continue your studies, the way you used to.and in any case, the syllabus is changed, read that part from my book, I assure you none of the question will come outside what I have given in both of my books and NCERT.
The pattern of the question has not been disclosed but it should be NCERT based. So, for NEET the focus should be NCERT..if you belong to state boards then start doing NCERTs.even if NEET is not there, NCERT would help you in your state entrances and other national entrances. Also do past papers of AIPMT, BHU Mains and AIIMS.
Also read my books Handbook of Biology and Biology @ your fingertips ( to be released in January) and please tell others about it.

      Get following books

Also solve past papers..not now but after some time…lay emphasis on concepts building and try to finish the syllabus i.e. solving the MCQs of 11th class syllabus by Februry..and from April, start studying for 12th portion and complete it before september. After, it start revising 11th and solve past year papers.then from November come back to 12th syllabus. and do get my books and also tell your friends about it..and keep following the blog.

I am a grade 12 student. I wasted my year 11. and I wasted half of my grade 12. Actually, in grade 12, I’ve prepared for the board exams but not for pmt. I can grasp things quickly and stuff but I’m easily distracted and lost focus. I attended one month entrance coaching , but have not followed up with entrance prep since. With only 5 more months left, I feel intimidated by the huge amount of stuffs i’ve left to study. I find it hard to focus on both cbse board exam and pmt. Yet I want to top boards and get a merit seat in entrance. Can I do it in 5months? PLease advise! BTW, excellent article! Keep inspiring!

    • Rahul Chawla says:

Well I assure you..more than 50% of the students giving AIPMT this year will have the same story..so first thing is that you are not alone.and secondly, jab jago tab savera..even if you start studying today..you would get selected if you just follow what I say.
      1. Be ready for the 200% devotion..no more wasting time.you will have to work extremely hard for this.
      2. start with NCERT biology.Cram it completely..better to understand it first.
The book would be available in december.
right now handbook of biology is available. you can get my book handbook of biology at flipkart.com.
      6. Start with class 11th syllabus and finish it in 2 months. from january start studying for your boards. It would automatically prepare yourself for the entrances. after the exams, start revising what all you have read.
keep following the website and also tell your friends about my book and the website.

    respected sir ,
sir my mummy is no more . she passed on 6th aug. after that i cannot concentrate on my studies….??
    plz suggest me //

    • Rahul Chawla says:

well, I know it would be very difficult for you to overcome your grief but the truth is that you will have to . I am sure your mother would have always wanted you to be a doctor and you should work hard to pursue her dream. It should be a driving force for your hard work, don’t let it be your weakness. and don’t think much about what has happened or why it has..just start studying the way you used to and in fact with greater momentum. If you are not able to study alone, you can go for group study with your friends for some time. Whenever you don’t feel like studying, read some thing interesting or solve past papers randomly. I used to do the same thing. So, start studying and keep following my blog and read the doubts of other students as well….it would help you in clearing your own doubts as well. also solve more and more past years papers and lay special emphasis on NCERTs and also both my books. You can get my book handbook of biology at flipkart.com. http://www.flipkart.com/books/8175156422/search-books-rahul-chawla/1?pid=1v23fb0scd&ref=b22ccd0c-aaac-4ddc-b48d-62ddb20cabc6&_l=CJHVEqJO3veuHytbACc9dw–&_r=TxuNa8SHIYDMtQ11knQotQ–

    hello sir,
i m 12th student n i just wanted to ask whether ncert books are sufficient for aiims and neet-ug?

    • Rahul Chawla says:

Whatever given in NCERT is asked, no doubt, but every thing asked is not given in the NCERT; so it is 100% essential to read other books, especially the objective books and pasty years papers..but you can also just rely on my books Handbook of Biology and Biology @ your fingertips. I have included all the important points along with mnemonics in my book and there is no need to refer any other objective book for biology.
so just read NCERT and my books in Biology. Handbook of Biology is now available online. click here to order the book
I also request you all to tell your friends about my book and help me in publicizing it.

  93. Shaheer says:

Sir,i have completed my +2 last year & now ihave joined in a coaching institute. Iam on of the topper in my institute in most of the chapter wise exame but my position in tested so far(many chapters) is below avg.pls tell me how to improve my position

    • Rahul Chawla says:

rankings in coaching tests are not the real criteria to judge your performance coz these test – series include unnecessary questions in the tests with the sole purpose of attracting more and more students.
So it is better to buy a set of previous year’s question papers.

In case you are not able to solve questions it means you are lacking somewhere..and the test will tell you yourself about your mistakes and the topics you are weak in, and then work to improve those mistakes.
And lay more emphasis on NCERTs, keep solving more and more previous papers and do get my book Handbook of Biology and Biology @ your fingertips. Handbook of Biology is now available online. click here to order the book

    • Rahul Chawla says:

Pay more attention towards building your concepts..lay more stress on NCERTs. join any local coaching if you are not able to understand things directly from reading the book. You have not got much time left so be sincere towards your studies.Refer the books I have mentioned in my article STRATEGY OF AIPMT 2012 FOR DROPPERS..I you think you can’t start reading those books now, then you just read following books:
      1. Biology: NCERT 11th and 12th + Handbook of Biology (available in the markets now) + Biology @ your fingertips( would be launched in October)
you can order the book online and pay at the time of delivery.
You can easily rely on both these books as they cover all the most important points frequently asked in exams.
      2. Physics: Teacher’s notes or comprehensive Physics by Laxmi publications or Pradeep Physics ( Just read theory, learn formulae and see all the solved examples..no need to go for unsolved ones and MCQs)

      3. Chemistry – NCERTs complete + Pradeep Chemistry ( Read only important parts from theory ( you can leave if you are running short of time) and see solved examples)

Also solve previous papers..atleast last 5 years papers of AIPMT and the state PMT you would be giving and analyse your score while solving..report your mistakes in a register while solving the paper and correct them in future.
Also, keep following my website or just subscribe it, and tell your friends about my website and my books. Help me in publicizing my books so that I can write more such books

      • Rahul Chawla says:

and if you have already read the article then, Identify your mistakes which you committed last year..whether you did not studied or you did not study from the point of view of a competitive exam or you did not know what to study or you did not solve the previous years papers…Rectify them and don’t repeat this time.and then start preparing again. The only thing you need to do is to study from the point of view of Medical Entrance Examinations. You need to solve more and more previous years question papers. Keep visiting the site or you can just subscribe it. also have a look at the doubts which other ppl have asked..it would be helpful for u.
