On July 23, 2024, The Supreme Court has delivered its final verdict on the NEET 2024 paper leak scam, sparking controversy among medical aspirants and educators. Despite acknowledging the leak at two centers, the court ruled out a re-examination, citing lack of evidence of widespread cheating or irregularities.

Here are the key observations made by the CJI in the NEET 2024 Verdict:
Key Observations by the Chief Justice of India (CJI)
- No Widespread Malpractice: IIT-Madras found no evidence of large-scale cheating.
- Localized Issues: Malpractice occurred in Patna and Godhra, affecting 47 candidates.
- Re-Test and Grace Marks: NTA’s re-test for 1,563 candidates stood.
- Counselling Schedule: NTA will begin NEET-UG counselling by July 2024.
- Future Measures: Stricter measures will prevent future irregularities.
Implications of the Verdict
The Supreme Court’s decision has significant implications for medical aspirants. While the verdict brings clarity to the NEET 2024 process, it also raises concerns about the integrity of the examination system.
Concerns Raised
Critics argue that even a single instance of malpractice undermines the exam’s integrity. The court’s decision may set a precedent for future cases, potentially compromising the fairness of competitive exams.
Comparison with AIPMT 2015
During the AIPMT 2015 hearing, the Bench clearly stated, “The examination stands vitiated even if one student is benefited illegally,” and ordered a re-examination. This raises questions about the consistency of the court’s decisions.
Way Forward
The Supreme Court’s call for stricter measures to prevent future irregularities is a step in the right direction. A high-level committee will recommend improvements in transparency and fairness, ensuring the integrity of future exams.

Our Take On NEET 2024 verdict:
The Supreme Court has ruled out Re NEET but acknowledged that a paper leak occurred at two centers. Any paper leak—regardless of magnitude—undermines the integrity of the entire exam. One cannot claim the leak was limited since it could spread across the country in seconds via mobile phones. If the leak occurred before the exam began, Re NEET is the only solution.
During the AIPMT 2015 hearing, the Bench clearly stated, “The examination stands vitiated even if one student is being benefited illegally,” and ordered a re-examination.
