Why choose Anatomy? Pros and cons
Why doctors choose it
- Hours are predictable, with no emergencies and no work taken home.
- Faculty posts are generally available, especially in newer colleges, and promotions are largely time-bound.
- Clinical and non-clinical faculty in medical colleges start on comparable pay scales.
- There is time for research, including embryology, genetics and cadaveric studies.
- Helping students understand a difficult concept is deeply satisfying.
What to weigh carefully
- There is no direct patient care or clinical exposure.
- Income plateaus over a career compared with clinical practice.
- Jobs depend on medical colleges, which are not present in every city.
- Administrative and committee work can be heavy.
- Choosing it only because no clinical seat was available often leads to frustration.
What does an anatomist do?
Anatomists teach first-year MBBS students through dissection, demonstrations, histology and embryology. Departments also manage body donation programmes and embalming, and modern tools such as 3D models and virtual dissection tables are changing how anatomy is taught.
Research is a realistic part of the job, with time available after teaching hours. Areas include embryology, genetics, stem cells and cadaveric studies, and some anatomists move into clinical embryology or genetics after further training.
Anatomy residency in India: what to expect
Residency follows near nine-to-five hours with no emergencies. Alongside teaching, residents handle documentation and committee work. A thesis, research publications and a logbook are part of the training, and departments are usually friendly and supportive.
- Expect teaching, dissection hall work and academic presentations.
- Use your free time for research and publications.
- Learn modern teaching methods and tools.
- Keep your clinical knowledge up to date if you hope to practise later.
Verified residents rate their own departments on the HealthPil Residency Index: clinical exposure, teaching, duty hours and toxicity.

Career options after MD Anatomy
Government service and teaching
The main track runs from senior resident to assistant professor, associate professor, professor and head of department, with administrative roles up to dean for some.
Private medical colleges
Private colleges employ anatomy faculty, sometimes with negotiable pay, particularly in remote areas.

Some anatomists teach online or coach students for entrance exams. Clinical practice on the basis of your MBBS may be possible, but it depends on your medical registration and on your employer's rules, as many government and college posts restrict private practice.
Further training

Working abroad
Research and teaching roles abroad are possible, depending on each country's requirements.

MD Anatomy vs DNB: which is better?
MD Anatomy is offered in most medical colleges, while DNB seats are few and there is no diploma. For a teaching career, choose a department with good dissection facilities, active research and supportive faculty.
- Check the body donation programme and dissection facilities.
- Look for research output and thesis support.
- Ask seniors about the teaching load and administrative work for residents.

Anatomist salary in India
Anatomy faculty earn standard medical college salaries, which rise with time-bound promotions. Remote and private colleges may pay more to attract faculty.
- Government (verified): Senior Residents at central institutes such as AIIMS are paid at Level 11 of the 7th CPC pay matrix, with an entry basic pay of ₹67,700 per month plus Non-Practising Allowance (NPA) and admissible allowances (as stated in AIIMS recruitment notices). State government pay and stipends vary.
- Assistant professor, Delhi (indicative): about ₹1.5–1.8 lakh per month.
- Associate professor (indicative): about ₹1.8–2 lakh per month.
Indicative only: private figures are based on what practising doctors shared in interviews (2024–25). They are not guaranteed earnings, and actual pay varies widely with city, institution and experience.
Future scope of Anatomy: saturation and AI
New medical colleges keep creating faculty demand, so jobs are generally available, especially for those willing to work outside big cities. Teaching technology is advancing, and anatomists contribute to digital and AI-based learning tools.
Artificial intelligence and virtual dissection can support teaching, but skilled teachers who explain and inspire remain essential.
Myths about Anatomy
MythAnatomy faculty do nothing but teach dissection.
FactMany also lead research, body donation programmes and modern teaching initiatives.
MythThere are no jobs in anatomy.
FactFaculty vacancies are common, especially in newer and remote colleges.
MythChoosing anatomy ends all clinical options.
FactFurther training in embryology or genetics remains possible, and clinical practice on the basis of MBBS may be allowed depending on your registration and employer's rules.

Should you choose Anatomy? My advice
- Private colleges have more faculty vacancies, but salaries there are usually lower than in government posts. Securing a faculty post in a good government institution is difficult.
- Tier-2 and tier-3 cities have openings that many people do not want to take. The salary is basic, but the work-life balance is excellent.
- If you are talented and get selected in a good academic institution, you get a good work-life balance, a decent salary and strong research opportunities.
- If you enjoy teaching, you can also teach NEET PG aspirants and medical, dental and physiotherapy students. This suits only those with a genuine inclination for teaching.
