Why choose Biochemistry? Pros and cons
Why doctors choose it
- Work-life balance is good, without the emotional weight of direct patient care.
- It is less competitive than the other laboratory specialties, and faculty vacancies are common.
- Career options are wide: teaching, diagnostic laboratories, research, industry and emerging fields.
- Medical biochemists play a key role in laboratory quality and accreditation.
- Indian MD Biochemistry graduates are valued in research settings abroad.
What to weigh carefully
- Many students remember it as a dry first-year subject, and few choose it.
- There is no direct patient care.
- Some faculty posts are filled by candidates with an MSc rather than an MD.
- Some emerging fields are still at an early stage in India.
- Salaries follow fixed scales unless you move into industry.
What does a biochemist do?
Biochemists teach medical students a wide range of topics, including molecular biology, immunology, cancer biology, cell biology and metabolic medicine. In diagnostic laboratories, they run quality control, detect errors in sample collection and transport, report critical values to clinicians and help interpret results.
In accredited laboratories, the medical biochemist oversees the entire process, from sample collection to the final report. Research and the development of diagnostic kits and assays are also part of the field.
Biochemistry residency in India: what to expect
Residency is generally close to regular hours, although it varies by institute. Well-staffed central institutes allow more time for academics and rotations through laboratory medicine, while state colleges may be busier and have fewer research facilities.
- Expect teaching, laboratory work and a thesis.
- Learn quality control and laboratory accreditation standards thoroughly.
- Seek exposure to molecular biology and research.
- Commit fully to the specialty, even if it was not your first choice.
Verified residents rate their own departments on the HealthPil Residency Index: clinical exposure, teaching, duty hours and toxicity.
Is Biochemistry the right branch for you?

- Enjoy basic sciences and the molecular basis of disease.
- Like teaching, analysis or research.
- Want to stay connected to clinical medicine without direct patient care.
- Are interested in diagnostics, quality systems or industry.
- Value work-life balance.
It may not suit you if you
- Want direct patient care or hands-on clinical work.
- Find laboratory and molecular work uninteresting.
- Want rapid income growth without moving into industry.
- Are choosing it only because nothing else was available.

Biochemist salary in India
Biochemistry faculty follow standard medical college pay scales. Industry roles generally pay better, while diagnostic laboratory salaries vary by employer and city.
- Government (verified): Senior Residents at central institutes such as AIIMS are paid at Level 11 of the 7th CPC pay matrix, with an entry basic pay of ₹67,700 per month plus Non-Practising Allowance (NPA) and admissible allowances (as stated in AIIMS recruitment notices). State government pay and stipends vary.
Reliable private earnings figures for this specialty are limited. Speak to practising biochemists in the sector that interests you before deciding.
Future scope of Biochemistry: saturation and AI
Faculty demand is steady, and diagnostic laboratories increasingly need trained medical biochemists for quality and accreditation. Molecular diagnostics, genetics and other emerging fields are expanding the opportunities.
Laboratory automation and artificial intelligence are growing, which makes skills in quality systems, interpretation and molecular methods more valuable.

Should you choose Biochemistry? My advice
- Private colleges have more vacancies but usually pay less than government posts. Faculty posts in good government institutions are hard to secure.
- Tier-2 and tier-3 cities have openings that many avoid. The salary is basic, but the work-life balance is excellent.
- In a good academic institution, you get a decent salary and strong research opportunities.
- Teaching NEET PG aspirants and medical, dental and physiotherapy students is an option, but only for those with a genuine inclination for it.
